Cannabis Research Institute launches in South Africa

The CRI incorporates the use of multidisciplinary approaches to advance cannabis medicinal, veterinary and complementary drug development. It incorporates clinical research and data analytical trials, develops cutting-edge methodology and utilises state of the art equipment and technology.

The institute is partnered with South African and international research organisations. The CRI also works with universities, high tech innovative companies and industry aligned corporations to provide research based proven approaches to cannabis and cannabinoid therapy management.

Setting industry standards

The combined services and capabilities of the CRI will set industry standards in southern Africa for best practice and good governance in cannabis producing facilities. The CRI will partner with government and local and international regulatory bodies to develop and help implement policies pertaining to Good Agricultural and Cultivation Practice, Good Manufacturing Practice, Good Laboratory Practice and Good Clinical Practice.

It has selected the Afriplex Cannabis Laboratory as its dedicated testing facility for cultivation, extraction and final packaged product testing. The coalition between investors, producers, innovators, manufacturers, regulators and distribution centres maintains the focus on the reliable, standardised, safe and regulated cannabis products for use by patients in need.

Optimising the supply chain

Nurturing quality, professional standards and methodology facilitates the availability of products and economic benefits for current and future markets within the cannabis community. The CRI assists in establishing novel research. Its involvement improves laboratory analysis, product development and manufacturing processes. The institute engages in developing the knowledge of students and pharma, medical and agricultural professionals. This focus on development also extends to tools, process equipment and technology as the CRI seeks to optimise every step of the supply chain from cannabis cultivation, harvest and extraction to final product development and manufacturing.

Lauren McMillan, CRI general manager, comments: ‘With an extensive basket of services focusing on developing medicinal cannabis capability in South Africa, we are taking the lead in keeping the country at the forefront of innovation. Our partnership with leading international players allows acceleration of local R&D programmes, providing cannabis derived products for the treatment for a broad spectrum of acute and chronic conditions experienced at all stages of life.’
