Rand considered one of the most volatile currencies
The rand turned 60 this year. It was introduced in February 1961 as a decimal replacement for the South African pound, which operated on the pounds, shillings and pence system. Named after the gold-rich Witwatersrand, the rand had a pretty sheltered childhood, until the early 1980s, mostly pegged against the US dollar and the UK pound.
