Despite challenges, hope shines bright for South Africa's construction industry
In the midst of South Africa's celebration of reduced unemployment rates, the construction industry emerges as a source of optimism, having added 104,000 jobs in the second quarter of 2023. Eben Meyburgh, CEO of GVK-Siya Zama, one of the nation's major construction companies, cautiously welcomes these positive signs while acknowledging persistent challenges such as unsustainable pricing, high risks, and the emigration of skilled construction workers. Meyburgh's leadership, spanning over 18 years with the company and becoming CEO in 2015, emphasizes the imperative to innovate and adapt in an industry burdened by regulations and limited government support. Despite these difficulties, the company has achieved growth, marked by the successful completion of projects like the Sipetu District Hospital, offering meaningful employment in rural areas, and the redevelopment of Cape Town station, contributing to student accommodation and the city's revitalization.
