Comrades runners should ensure they have adequate insurance cover

The world’s largest ultra-marathon takes place on Sunday June 10, and runners should ensure they have adequate insurance cover in place before they tie their shoelaces to tackle the Comrades Marathon.

Colin Mchunu, Senior Manager at Alexander Forbes Insurance said runners should have All Risk Cover for the accessories they carry on and with them as well as Personal Accident Cover.

“Read and understand the small print of your policy and make sure you are covered for all eventualities. This includes notifying your insurance of small but costly items, such as running shoes or GPS running watches,” Mchunu added.

“Comrades runners should consider Personal Accident Cover, which gives lump sum options for death, and or permanent disablement, weekly benefits for temporarily being unable to work for up to a year (referred to as temporary total disability).”

Mchunu advised asking your insurer to quote for Travel insurance to cover travel costs and the financial loss of bookings if you are injured or become ill.

He also reminded those travelling to Maritzburg for the marathon to remember to put into action all the usual tips on securing your house and goods, such as parking the car away from any prying eyes, asking a neighbour to empty your post box and checking that your alarm is working.

“Don’t close your curtains and leave lights on – that is a dead giveaway to would-be thieves that no-one is at home. With the current power surges it is also advisable to unplug all electronic equipment at the wall as a precautionary measure and where possible ensure there are no perishables in the fridge.”
