Design Joburg, Featuring Rooms On View 2019

Design Joburg, featuring Rooms on View, is on at the Sandton Convention Centre from 24-26 May.

Design Joburg, featuring Rooms on View, will once again include the ARCHITECTS GALLERY, a uniquely curated print and 3-D model exhibit of exemplary residential and commercial architectural projects, this year with a brand-new line-up of studios.

Design Joburg, featuring Rooms on View is presented by Sanlam Private Wealth, and set out to flip the traditional notion of an exhibition on its head, and they’ve succeeded. With this year’s new Creative Directors Philippe van der Merwe and Greg Gamble, of Tonic fame, steering the show, visitors can expect a refreshing injection to the established order.

Once again, South Africa’s best designers, architects and style shapers will transform the Sandton Convention Centre into Africa’s hotspot for the most innovative and covetable interiors.

This year’s visitors will notice the show’s progressive layout change, which will ensure that every inch of the space offers a hotbed of intriguing and inspiring décor and design.

The thrilling headline addition to the show, and hands down our biggest news, will undoubtedly be the KOHLER Theatre. This auditorium space, designed by the show’s creative directors and leading flooring brand Belgotex, will host internationally acclaimed designers Michael Anastassiades and Yinka Ilori – courtesy of SA Tourism and KOHLER respectively. On the afternoon of the opening day, Friday, 24 May, Yinka Ilori together with local and continental leaders in the industry are participating in a forum discussion on “Experiential Luxury” as part of KOHLER’s Design Forum. The programme for the rest of the weekend will then host local and continental design luminaries, all of whom will share their insights by way of not-to-be-missed talks and presentations. With full access to local and global design luminaries, KOHLER Theatre visitors are in for a treat.
One of the show’s major differentiators, its CoLabs, will once again see stellar designers creating collaborative room sets using the wares of some of South Africa’s top drawer brands, artisans and suppliers. The line-up of designers this year includes Dylan Thomaz, Fanie van Zyl, Tuami Zulu, Nelson Kubheka, Julia Day and Wendy Douglas.

Design Joburg, featuring Rooms on View, is on at the Sandton Convention Centre from 24-26 May.Other key attractions at this year’s show include…

ROOMS ON VIEW – This show-within-a-show, celebrating almost 20 years, will provide South Africans with the latest local and international trending décor, furniture, bathrooms, kitchens and more, all arranged within signature Rooms on View room sets. Still under the curative eye of local design maven Sumari Krige, this year visitors can expect progressive displays with tangible take-home ideas and inspiration.

SPA ZAR – This highly anticipated feature in conjunction with SA Tourism will present a selection of hand-picked creatives from multiple disciplines, both established and fledgling, showing their wares within cubes curated and designed by the talented team from Source IBA under the creative direction of Mardre Meyer. The idea is to present local design talent with product that is primed to hit the commercial market.

ARCHITECTS GALLERY – Given the success of this feature in 2018, the show’s creators are bringing this display of exemplary residential and commercial architectural projects back, but this time with a brand new line-up of studios. Visitors can once again expect to be immersed into these projects with special insights through a uniquely curated print and 3-D model exhibit.

ART CORRIDOR – You asked for more art at the show and Design Joburg has heeded the call. The all-new Art Corridor will present several leading galleries who will be showing new work by exciting artists. The lineup includes top gallerists White River, Candice Berman, World Art and Artvault.

SA FURNITURE COLLECTIVE – Curated by the show’s creative directors, this feature will showcase the latest furniture designs from a diverse selection of top designers from throughout the country. Expect the latest creations from many of South Africa’s luminaries, including the likes of Bofred, Pedersen & Lennard and Jacobs Collection, all presented by our Tonic creatives in a unique fashion.

HENDRICKS GIN BAR – This wildly popular bar is back! The premium gin’s unique blend of 11 botanicals, will this time be reinterpreted by Joburg’s pre-eminent furniture and interior design brand Studio19.

RETAIL CORRIDOR – Last year’s retail offering was a great success, proving that visitors are keen to shop the show! We’re pleased to announce that this year’s Retail Corridor will be located in the very heart of the show with a larger contingency of brands on board including KARE, Dark, Time Brandits, Culinary Equipment Company, Skultuna and ILVE. Expect a amalgam of décor accessories, kitchen supplies, lighting, clocks, ceramics and more.

RESTAURANT – This year, Design Joburg has teamed up with celebrated Sowetan-born chef Wandile Mabaso. He’s bringing something fresh – entitled les créatifs – to the show’s ‘food-design’ table. Locally-trained and New York-honed (with a flair for the French), Wandile’s menu promises to be a celebration of African-fusion.

With the standard of design ever evolving, boundaries being pushed and the pull to Design Joburg becoming a persistent force, visitors and exhibitors are anticipating the best show yet.
