The Southern African Institute of Welding (SAIW) is embarking on a transformative journey to boost operational efficiency and enhance service delivery for its students and stakeholders. Faced with recent challenges, such as delays in releasing examination results, the Institute is implementing a comprehensive strategic overhaul focused on leadership restructuring and process optimization.
The need for change
In the face of South Africa’s growing reliance on a skilled workforce to propel industrial growth and develop infrastructure, institutions like SAIW are crucial. As SAIW President Joseph Zinyana highlights, the Institute plays a vital role in equipping professionals with the expertise needed in sectors like manufacturing, energy, and construction. “The SAIW is committed to offering world-class training and certification to help local industries remain competitive while providing skilled professionals access to quality career opportunities. Strengthening leadership
To enhance leadership and overall operational effectiveness, the SAIW has conducted an internal evaluation resulting in key leadership appointments. Confidence Lekoane steps in as the Acting Executive Director, while the Executive Director position remains open for recruitment. Shelton Zichawo is appointed as General Manager to ensure business continuity. The Certification arm of SAIW welcomes a new team of highly experienced personnel, aiming to deliver depth, accountability, and focused deliverables.

Digital transformation and innovation
Looking towards the future, SAIW’s primary focus for 2025 is digital transformation. By automating and streamlining core processes, the Institute aims to improve service delivery. Artificial intelligence (AI) will be integrated into exam marking and learning material development to align training with the latest higher education standards.
Beyond efficiency improvements, SAIW is devoted to making training and certification more affordable, ensuring access to quality education despite economic pressures. Crucially, the Institute will maintain the integrity and quality of its services in-house by not outsourcing company and personnel certification.
