Natural cosmetics remain a strong trend in the cosmetic industry

On Wednesday 7 October at 16:00 CET, Hentz will lead a session entitled Alternative thinking: Natural product protection with a plus. In the natural antimicrobials toolbox, there are different categories of actives available that can defend cosmetic products against contamination, yet Hentz says ‘very few of them can offer protection against the full spectrum, making combinations mandatory’.

“Antimicrobials also have limitations towards certain product categories or can’t be applied in higher pH formulations,” he explains. “I will also share insights into schülke’s NewTech project, which aims to identify new, at best natural or natural-identical antimicrobial molecules and to develop a blend suitable for rinse-off and leave-on cosmetics that offer protection even at a neutral pH.”

New lemongrass antimicrobial blend

Through schülke’s ongoing screening of new potential (natural) antimicrobial substances, the company has identified several promising candidates amongst the groups of organic acids, alcohols, glycols, essential oils and plant extracts. One of these candidates is lemongrass oil (INCI: Cymbopogon Flexuosus Herb Oil), obtained by steam distillation or extraction from a tropical plant of the grass family. Several Cymbopogon species are used for culinary, medicinal, flavouring or even cosmetic applications. A new antimicrobial blend containing lemongrass is one example of the above approach, and will be highlighted in Hentz’s technical seminar.

The natural preservation challenge

According to Hentz, natural cosmetics remain a strong trend in the cosmetic industry driven by consumer demand for healthy and sustainable products. Hence, there are currently solutions available that cover nearly all categories of cosmetic products based on innovative and creative formulations developed from raw materials of natural origin.

“Mother nature offers a huge pool of functional actives and excipients for many purposes. Due to their nature, many of these materials are easily degradable by microbes, whereby some initially already bear a high load of microorganisms. Consequently, the protection of natural products from microbial contamination is a challenge for formulators since selected antimicrobials must comply with the requirements of various certification organisations.”

This is a key area of focus for schülke, which is a leading global supplier of innovative antimicrobials for personal care. Based in Norderstedt, schülke supplies more than 3 000 customers in over 80 countries. With affiliates in Europe, US, Brazil, China and Singapore, and represented in South Africa by Savannah Fine Chemicals, schülke personal care is a truly global player.
