Mica and Plascon brighten the lives of young patients at NMCH

In a touching continuation of their commitment to supporting South Africa’s children, Mica and Plascon’s partnership with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital (NMCH) has brought joy, hope, and tangible support to this iconic healthcare facility. What began in 2023 as a charitable gesture has grown into an inspiring initiative of generosity and creativity.

THE BEGINNING

In 2023, Mica and Plascon handed over an incredible R300 000 to the NMCH, a significant contribution celebrated with the prestigious Globe Trotter Certificate. This initial gesture marked the start of a meaningful collaboration. The NMCH, which opened its doors to its first patients in 2017, now provides world-class care in specialties such as radiology, neurology, cardiology, and psychology.

To support this renowned facility, Mica and Plascon launched a creative campaign featuring a 20L Africa-themed promotional paint tin, designed to be repurposed. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of these tins was donated to the hospital – a unique and impactful initiative that resonated with both customers and the community.

A CREATIVE TWIST AT MICA MARKET 2024

Building on this success, the partnership evolved at the 2024 Mica Market with the introduction of the Build-A-Bear initiative. Delegates crafted their own Bear- it -Yourself keepsakes, with a charitable twist: for every bear purchased, Mica and Plascon donated a matching bear to the NMCH. This heartwarming programme led to the donation of 200 bears, a testament to the collaborative spirit of the Mica and Plascon community.

A FESTIVE FINALE: CHRISTMAS CHEER AT NMCH

The pinnacle of the partnership took place on 13 December, during the NMCH’s annual Christmas party. In an event designed to align with the festive season, the hospital became a haven of joy and celebration for patients and their families. Children and parents alike engaged in a variety of activities, from crafting their own Christmas decorations to adorning the grand tree in the hospital’s entrance hall. The day was festive, with music, face painting, and performances, highlighted by appearances from Crazy Crafts’ beloved CiCi Bird and Father Christmas himself.

Ayabulela Poro, who was the MC on the day, added energy to the event, leading children in dancing and singing alongside CiCi and Santa. The excitement peaked when each child was presented with a beautifully wrapped teddy bear, complete with its own ‘house’ box, birth certificate, and unique name. A gift pack from Crazy Crafts capped off the joyous occasion, bringing smiles to young faces during a time they might otherwise have found difficult.

CELEBRATING THE FUTURE

This initiative exemplifies the power of partnerships in making a difference. Mica and Plascon’s ongoing support not only bolster the NMCH’s mission of providing world-class healthcare but also ensures that the hospital’s young patients experience the simple joys of childhood, even during trying times.

With initiatives like this, Mica and Plascon have shown that a commitment to community is more than just words; it’s about action, compassion, and making the world brighter – one bear, one tin of paint, and one child at a time. As the NMCH continues to serve as a beacon of hope for South Africa’s children, Mica and Plascon stand as proud allies in their mission.

A heartfelt thank you to Mica, Plascon, Crazy Crafts, and all who contributed to spreading joy this holiday season. After all, as this initiative reminds us, children are indeed our future.
