Power Festival 2023: Bigger, better and full of surprises

The second Power Build ‘Power Festival’ held at the Emerald Casino exceeded all expectations, surpassing the inaugural event in 2022 in both size and quality as the group has witnessed an impressive 30%-member growth.

The festival kicked off with an exciting sports day featuring obstacle racing, action cricket, darts, and jumping castles, generously sponsored by Vermont Sales, GlueDevil, Academy Brushware, ACDC, and Ingco. The day was a resounding success, marked by camaraderie and fierce competition.

An evening to remember

Following the fun sports day was a dinner sponsored by AutObarn. Hosted by Shaky Russell of Team Shaky, the evening began with the prize-giving ceremony for the day’s events, with GlueDevil and Vermont Sales emerging as victors. Armand Feldtmann, MD of Power Build, delivered a brief presentation highlighting the group’s impressive growth, emphasising adaptability and resilience, and welcoming new members, including the AutObarn group of stores.

Innovations and achievements

Feldtmann discussed the factors contributing to the group’s growth, including Central Accounts powered by AVO from Nedbank, a loyalty programme tailored for independent retailers and The HoneyPot 2.0 digital platform. An introduction video showcasing HoneyPot 2.0’s advantages was presented, illustrating its role as an efficient, centralised portal for members and suppliers. This unique solution streamlines communication and enables cooperative promotions with the Loyalty Programme and the Adumo payment portal – a fast, secure portal supported by all major banks, which can be integrated with the existing POS or used as a standalone solution. During the evening, AutObarn’s MD Terry Brand shared insights into their voluntary buying group and franchise, expressing gratitude for joining the Power Build buying group, which enhances their stores’ competitiveness.

Moreover, the evening featured a delightful meal, followed by an interactive drumming session by Drumsound – a crowd favourite. The night concluded with a captivating performance by the renowned band Reborn.

Trade show extravaganza

The second day featured the much-anticipated Telkom-sponsored trade show at the Emerald Arena. Amid the rugby World Cup fever, a colossal rugby ball exhibit – created by Roelf van Rooyen of Wow We, greeted attendees. Members and suppliers had their details captured in QR codes on their name tags negating the need to fill in forms. Supplier/member interactions, Trade-day specials and competitions with valuable prizes were the order of the day.

Awards night

The Power Festival wrapped up with an awards dinner sponsored by Avo from Nedbank. Avo from Nedbank’s beyond banking division executive Olebogeng Mogale elucidated the benefits of its working capital solution, offering interest-free credit and upfront settlement discounts for members and guaranteed payment for suppliers.

Store revamps

During the evening, members and suppliers were shown some of the store revamps that have taken place since the last Power Festival and how they have progressed since then. A video of some of the new members was screened where they mentioned how sales and business have shown growth since becoming PowerBuild members. These stores are Kimberly PowerBuild, Garsfonetin PowerBuild, eMalahleni PowerBuild, Krugersdorp PowerBuild, and Randfontein PowerBuild.

Acknowledgments and accolades

Feldtmann extended gratitude to sponsors, behind-the-scenes staff, trade and value-added suppliers, and members from across the country. Special recognition went to the Green Beetle team, Vermont Sales, and Wow We for their exceptional contributions.

The Bakkie giveaway

The highlight of the evening was the draw for two Suzuki bakkies, rewarding members who achieved a 25% growth from the previous year. From the 29 qualifying member companies, 10 finalists were randomly drawn and invited on stage where they were handed a key. If the key set off the alarm, the holder won the bakkie. Wilderness Hardware and Steel and Pipe KZN emerged as the two lucky winners.

Grand finale

The event concluded with an unforgettable performance by the Barnyard Theatre cast, ‘The PowerBuild Walk of Fame’, paying tribute to iconic movie music. The Power Festival 2023 left everyone in high spirits, with memories of fun, networking, and celebration.
