Rejuvenation of natural stone and terrazzo flooring

Reviving floors made of natural stone and terrazzo.

Union Tiles established in 1922, has been in the polished concrete and textured concrete processing tile industry for over 100 years. With this intimate knowledge and experience, Union Tiles branched out into doing on-site floor rejuvenation of natural stone and terrazzo flooring, with an experienced team and specialised equipment.

Union Tiles is able to rejuvenate textured sandstone, that has become weathered and soiled from the elements whilst retaining the natural cleft finish of the sandstone or slate. A specialised stone sealant is applied to enhance the colour of the stone and also ensures ease of ongoing maintenance.

At the University of Pretoria refurbishment at the Vergeet- My- Nie ladies’ residence, built in 1925, the team were asked to rejuvenate terrazzo tiles laid + 90 years ago. Union Tiles had manufactured and supplied these tiles that were concealed and tiled over with ceramic tiles.

The team undertook a sample for the appointed Heritage Architect, Helene Potgieter and was awarded the project based on the sample results. To expose the handmade terrazzo floor, buried under the ceramic tiles, the ceramic tiles were chopped off by the main contractor.  Then 5 to 10mm layer of tile adhesive was ground off to reveal the hand-crafted patterned terrazzo beneath laid + 90 years ago. A six-stage polishing process was undertaken, with diamond polishing tooling to bring the beautiful hand-crafted patterned terrazzo back to its original factory finish. Plenty of joy and appreciation for all involved in the refurbishment of this University heritage site!

This deep grinding and tile polishing and sealing process undertaken by the Union Tiles team at Pretoria University took two weeks… in addition to this, the Union Tiles terrazzo factory was asked by the architect Helene Potgieter to make special custom-made tiles, to match the existing 90-year-old patterned terrazzo tiles, to replace those that had been damaged during the upliftment of the ceramic tiles.

The final outcome of the repolished and sealed 90-year-old terrazzo floor had been restored to its original look and feel and was well received by HPA Heritage architects and the main contractor.
