Sika specified for Klein Constantia Winery

Sikafloor-20 PurCem, a hybrid flooring screed ideal for the winery environment, was used in the rehabilitation of old and damaged flooring at Klein Constantia Winery.

Dating back to 1685 and described as one of the world’s most beautiful wine estates, Klein Constantia is set amidst ancient trees on the upper foothills of the Constantiaberg, with views across False Bay.

The perfect location for cool climate wines, Klein Constantia produces some of South Africa’s top wines, including one of the world’s best natural sweet wines, Vin de Constance.

Being a world-class winery, it is important that Klein Constantia Winery maintains its optimum conditions throughout the year to live up to its global standards. The winery floor required a rehabilitation and Sika’s world-class products were specified. Desmond van Vuuren from CCRS was the main contractor on site, and Ian Wilkinson from Apex Construction Consultants was the onsite project manager.

The project required the identification and rehabilitation of old and damaged flooring at the winery. The bad substrates were removed and reprofiled with SikaCem®-810, a one-component modified SBR polymer additive that is mixed in with the floor screed to correctly shape the floor falls. Once complete, it was left to cure for 21 days to acquire the strength needed to apply Sikafloor®-20 PurCem®, which is a hybrid flooring screed ideal for the winery environment. It can withstand high impact, is slip resistant and allows for steam cleaning.

First the floors were prepared with a light grind and then termination slots were cut into them. These slots facilitate the holding and gripping of the new floor, thus increasing its lifespan. Thereafter, the specialist applicator used a hand trowel to apply the Sikafloor®-20 PurCem® at a 6mm thickness, which was then left to cure for five to seven days. This latter product is a hybrid flooring screed, and is an ideal solution for the winery environment. The completed project met the first-class standards of the top-class winery.
