LEDVANCE has comprehensively modernised the lighting of eleven outdoor sports facilities on the campus of the King Juan Carlos University in Fuenlabrada with LED floodlights, which significantly increase comfort for the athletes and at the same time sustainably reduce energy and maintenance costs.
The challenge
The outdoor sports facilities at the Fuenlabrada campus of the King Juan Carlos University have been illuminated with conventional floodlights since 2003. Due to the now very poor lighting level and correspondingly high maintenance costs, the lighting of four paddle courts, three tennis courts and four other multi-purpose courts was to be comprehensively modernised. The aim was to upgrade the sports facilities with better lighting quality, reduce maintenance costs, enable even more athletes to use the facilities and further improve the university’s image.
The solution
The university commissioned LEDVANCE to plan and implement a modern and energy-efficient lighting solution for the various sports facilities. In addition to several successful joint projects in the past, the high quality and adaptability of the LEDVANCE products as well as the comprehensive service and competent advice of the team were the main reasons for the decision. Accordingly, the LEDVANCE lighting experts equipped four paddle courts, three tennis courts and four other sports fields with a total of 60 MAX LUM P 600W LED floodlights and four MAX LUM P 900W LED foodlights, each with corresponding power supply units.
The advantages
The new lighting solution for the campus sports facilities offers the university and athletes a wide range of benefits: For example, the floodlight luminaires with extreme luminous intensities (luminous flux: up to 121 000 lm), low-flicker light, clear light distribution and simple dimming to up to 50 % ensure optimum visibility conditions at all times. A robust design and a wide ambient temperature range (-30 °C to + 50 °C) also ensure the long-term functionality of the luminaires. With energy savings of up to 45% compared to luminaires with conventional discharge lamps and a high luminous efficacy of 134 lm/W, the LED floodlights also set standards in terms of energy efficiency. And a 5-year guarantee and a service life of up to 100 000 hours (L70/B50 at 25 °C) make maintenance of the floodlight luminaires simple and cost-effective.

On behalf of the King Juan Carlos University in Fuenlabrada, LEDVANCE has designed and realised a powerful and sustainably efficient lighting solution for eleven courts on the campus’ outdoor sports facilities. The total of 64 LED floodlight luminaires significantly improve the quality of light at the facilities for the athletes and also impress with their robust design, high energy efficiency and significantly lower costs and effort for maintaining the luminaires.
