The UNEP’s Electric Mobility Programme is actively supporting over 50 countries to advance e-mobility, significantly reducing air pollution, improving public health, and enhancing local air quality.

Public transport also provides efficient and affordable mobility for larger populations, which helps in reducing GHG emissions and alleviating traffic congestion while simultaneously lowering fuel consumption.

Global policy and regional implications

The push for sustainable transport is reflected in global policy initiatives, with the EU and South African governments leading the way in adopting EV-friendly regulations and promoting local electric vehicle manufacturing.

Beyond electrification: Alternative fuels

While electrification is crucial, alternative fuels like ammonia, biofuels, hydrogen, and synthetic fuels also play essential roles. These options extend beyond carbon reduction in road transport to aviation and maritime sectors.
