Nikilesh (Nicky) Misra, Technical Manager at Simbithi Eco-Estate, shares practical insights on how the estate has adopted sustainable water management strategies. These methods address immediate challenges and lay the groundwork for long-term resilience, ensuring that Simbithi remains robust in the face of climate change.
Conscious consumption powered by smart metering
A cornerstone of our approach is the installation of smart water meters. Since 2021, residents can monitor their real-time water usage via an app, supporting conscious consumption. This not only helps identify wastage early, such as leaks, but also enables estate management to optimise distribution and reduce unnecessary losses.
Turning stormwater into an asset
Increasingly frequent extreme weather has made stormwater management a priority. Simbithi’s Sports Complex, covering 8,200 square metres, now features an attenuation system that slows runoff, helps prevent soil erosion, and protects our natural environment. In significant rain events, such as a one-in-50-year storm, the complex’s 260-cubic-metre attenuation tank, located beneath the lap pool, captures excess water and releases it gradually, mirroring pre-development flow rates. Not only does this reduce flood risk and protect downstream areas like the golf course and bushlands, but it also allows us to reuse stormwater for irrigation and pool replenishment. Here, runoff becomes a resource, contributing to both sustainability and enhanced amenities.
Fostering a water-wise culture
Infrastructure is only part of the story. Resident-led conservation is essential, as shown in our latest Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report, which notes increased adoption of rainwater harvesting. Hundreds of homes now collectively store thousands of kilolitres, easing pressure on municipal supplies. Ongoing water quality testing ensures our dams are safe for recreation, while complementary initiatives—like e-waste collection and solar energy—form part of a broader environmental commitment.
