SPAR owners of the newly opened Spar in Mams Mall in Mamelodi, outside Pretoria, selected full-bodied Terra-Stone authentic terrazzo tiles, from Union Tiles, for their bustling, hardworking 2300m2 floor, in the trading areas of their store, in favour of a polished concrete floor, which was their initial consideration.
In the retail trading areas, they requested two tile colours grey and charcoal in our Terra-Stone terrazzo tiles, installed and then ground and polished after installation by a specialised team from Union Tiles, to create a grooveless finish with a matching coloured tile grout. This installation was provided as a turnkey supply installed and polished and sealed finish, by Union Tiles Terrazzo Contracts division.
This is a unique seamless floor finish and is achieved using our full-bodied 20mm thick 600 by 600mm terrazzo tiles, this option allows for on-site surface grinding and polishing after installation, leaving a grooveless finish, ensuring dirt is not trapped in the conventional tile joint recesses or while washing the floors and it, therefore, makes for a far more “hygienic floor finish“ and most importantly, allows for easy gliding movement of shopping trolley wheels and pallet jacks for produce movement, over the polished grooveless tile joints, making the entire shopping experience, a true pleasure!
This hard-wearing, full-bodied terrazzo floor was also sealed after installation to ensure ease of maintenance and stain resistance. A neutral degreasing soap namely SQT Natural Stone Detergent is to be used to prolong the life of the tiles and sealer and for effective dirt and grease removal, for proper ongoing floor care.
In the restaurant areas, conventional grouting was undertaken, with no floor polishing to save costs, as there would be no trolley or pallet jack movement.
In the 350m2 Tops bottle store, our Terra-Stone terrazzo tiles in a grey terrazzo were installed and conventional grey tile grouting was used, providing a hard-wearing more cost-effective floor finish.
The other advantage of full-bodied terrazzo tiles is that they offer a very hard-wearing floor finish, ideal for commercial areas and there is the option that the tiles can be “rejuvenated by surface grinding and polishing on site ”removing -+1mm of the full-bodied surface layer in 20-30 years’ time, should the need arise, revealing a virgin and brand new terrazzo layer beneath and making this floor finish a very economical floor selection, considering it is made to last the entire lifespan of the Spar trading store.
The terrazzo can now also be provided in a seamless finish, with our NEW self-levelling chemically modified hard-wearing “Slimcrete Authentic Terrazzo“, supplied in 40kg bags, which is poured and polished on-site at a mere 12mm thickness or thicker, should the specification requirements and is then polished to a seamless hardwearing terrazzo floor.
