Imagine a workplace that fosters longevity, well-being, and a sense of community. While the term “blue zone” typically refers to geographic regions around the world where people live exceptionally long lives and have fewer chronic diseases as a result of specific lifestyle choices, South African companies can cultivate a similar environment in the workplace.
“At Medihelp Medical Scheme we’ve adopted the concept of a blue zone and adapted it to create our very own green zone (because of our corporate colours) that promotes health, wellness, rest, creativity, and productivity,” says Sandra Minne, head of Human Resources at Medihelp. “As a partner in and funder of healthcare, we follow a holistic human approach where all aspects – physical, mental, intellectual, moral, emotional, and spiritual – of humans are considered. We believe you can do this in your workplace too.”
What are blue zones?
Blue zones are regions where people consistently reach the age of 90 and beyond, thanks to a unique combination of diet, lifestyle, and social interaction. These areas include places like Okinawa in Japan, Icaria in Greece, and Loma Linda in California. The concept, made popular by American author and researcher Dan Buettner, highlights that while genetics play a role in longevity, the way you choose to live and your environment have a far greater impact.
Says Minne, “While you may not be able to change the country you live in, you can certainly transform your workplace into a blue zone. By promoting healthy habits, fostering connections, and prioritising well-being, you can help create an environment where employees can thrive and potentially extend their years of vitality and engagement. Start small, and watch as your workplace evolves into a community that values health and longevity.”
Here’s Medihelp’s tips on turning your workplace into a blue zone:
1. Promote a healthy diet
Encourage a plant-based diet by offering nutritious meal options in the cafeteria or break room. Stock healthy snacks, such as fruits, nuts, and whole grains, while limiting processed foods. Educate employees on the benefits of a balanced diet and even consider hosting cooking classes or workshops focused on healthy meal preparation.
2. Encourage physical activity
Integrate physical activity into the workday. Provide opportunities for walking meetings, create spaces for stretching or quick workouts, and consider offering fitness classes. Encourage employees to take regular breaks to move around, reducing sedentary behaviour. At Medihelp, we have partnered with a holistic wellbeing platform to encourage our staff to get regular exercise, meditate, and feed their soul.
3. Foster a sense of community
Build strong social connections among employees. Organise team-building activities, social events, or volunteer opportunities to strengthen bonds. A supportive work environment can significantly impact employee morale and longevity.
4. Prioritise mental well-being
Implement wellness programmes that focus on mental health. This could include mindfulness sessions, stress management workshops, or access to counselling services. Encourage open conversations about mental health to create a culture of support and understanding. “During our Feel Good Friday sessions, a life coach mentors Medihelpers about things like communication skills, values, and life purpose.”
5. Create a positive work environment
Design a workspace that promotes well-being. Ensure plenty of natural light, incorporate greenery, and provide comfortable areas for relaxation. A pleasant environment can enhance mood and productivity.
6. Encourage purpose and passion
Help employees find purpose in their work. Offer opportunities for professional development, mentoring, and personal growth. When employees feel connected to their work and see its impact, it can lead to greater satisfaction and longevity in their careers.
By combining all these factors, a happy, healthy, balanced, and creative workforce is not only a pleasant dream, but it becomes a wonderful reality.
