Vacancy: AMA executive director

The AMA is excited to announce a remarkable opportunity for a dynamic and visionary leader to join the industry association as executive director.

The Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association of South Africa, (more commonly known as the AMA), is the voice of the South African Aerosol Industry. It acts on behalf of the industry on a variety of issues such as legislation, education and the setting of national standards.

Founded in 1963, the AMA has been at the forefront of aerosol packaging legislation and safety standards for 60 years, making a significant impact on the aerosol industry. It is committed to driving positive change, fostering collaboration, and advocating for the betterment of the aerosol industry.


The AMA is seeking an accomplished and visionary executive director to lead the association into the future. The executive director will play a pivotal role in advancing the mission of the AMA, building strategic partnerships, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the association through value creation for its members. This individual will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the AMA, including strategic planning, programme development, relationships with government, technical training, increasing and retaining membership and financial stewardship.

Key responsibilities

Strategic leadership:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan in collaboration with the Executive Committee to achieve organisational goals.
  • Provide visionary leadership to drive the association’s mission, vision, and values.

Financial management:

  • Manage the association’s budget, and financial reporting, and ensure fiscal responsibility.

Programme development and management:

  • Oversee the development, execution, and evaluation of programmes and initiatives in alignment with the association’s mission and strategic objectives.
  • Manage the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme of the AMA, which is a registered Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO). 
  • Continuously assess programme effectiveness and make data-driven improvements.

Advocacy and stakeholder engagement:

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with members, related associations and key government departments, including DoEL, DTI, ITAC, etc.
  • Represent the association to external stakeholders, including government agencies, industry partners, and the media.
  • Advocate for the interests of the association’s members, B2B and B2C. 

Board relations and governance:

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee providing regular updates, reports, and recommendations.
  • Ensure compliance with non-profit regulations and governance best practices.

Team leadership and development:

  • Lead, mentor, and manage sub-committees, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the association.

Experience and competencies:

  • Minimum of five years in a senior management role within the packaging industry, ideally within the aerosol industry.
  • Proven experience in financial management.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and inspire a wide range of stakeholders, including Government Departments such as DoEL, DTI, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic plans and achieve measurable results.
  • Knowledge of and passion for the aerosol industry.
  • Knowledge of managing an EPR scheme will be an advantage.
  • Commitment to ethical and transparent organisational practices.
