Resveratrol re-imagined for healthy living

By Abby Vorster

A healthy immune system is the body’s first line of defence against the risk of disease and infections, and resveratrol can be part of the solution.

Resveratrol is a polyphenol found in several types of plants. In grapes, resveratrol acts as a protector from the harsh environment. Scientific evidence suggests that it can do the same in humans working at a cellular level to support healthy living.

Published research and clinical data suggests that resveratrol can play a role in healthy living through bone health, cardiovascular health, blood glucose support, healthy cognitive function, skin youthfulness and oral health.

As a producer of the Veri-te™ resveratrol brand, Evolva is committed to supporting clinical trials and research studies to further understand the important benefits of resveratrol in human ageing.

Veri-te can be formulated into multiple applications, including capsules, tablets, softgels, liquid shots, beverages (where approved for use in this application), powder sticks, film strips, chocolate, chewing gum, creams, serum and cosmetics.

Resveratrol and eye health

In studies, resveratrol has been shown to have beneficial effects on eye health in several common age-related eye diseases and disorders. The key actions of resveratrol are due to its antioxidant, antiapoptotic, anti-inflammatory, antiangiogenic and vaso-relaxant properties.1

There are four main ocular disorders or diseases. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is said to be the leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50.2 An estimated 140m people globally suffer from diabetic retinopathy.3 Primary open-angle glaucoma is a chronic disease thought to affect more than 60m people worldwide.4 Age-related cataracts are responsible for 51% of global blindness.5

Boosts cognitive health

As we age decreased flow to the brain and biological processes such as inflammation, normal neurobiological changes, and diet and lifestyle play a role in the cognitive ageing process.6

In addition to physical and mental exercise helping to preserve cognitive performance, current ageing populations are seeking specialised nutritional strategies to support memory and cognition.7-9

Research shows resveratrol is an effective ingredient in supporting many key neurological functions in an older population. It improves memory performance in older adults, augments central blood flow, enhances cognitive performance in postmenopausal women, and show effects on Alzheimer’s biomarkers.

Evolva recently signed a research agreement with the University of Newcastle, Australia to co-fund one of the most ambitious studies yet, measuring the effect of daily Veri-te resveratrol supplementation on brain health and other parameters in postmenopausal women.10

Skin health protector

In the anti-ageing category where proven efficacy is key, resveratrol offers a powerful and scientifically backed ingredient that can help rejuvenate and energise skin.

The antioxidant properties of resveratrol and its effect on skin health have been the topic of many discussions.11 Research also indicates resveratrol may promote skin whitening,12 and that it helps to reduce acne. As with other polyphenols, resveratrol has some mild antimicrobial properties. Unlike other polyphenols, resveratrol has been shown to be particularly active against several acne-forming strains.13, 14

Available in South Africa from Savannah Fine Chemicals, Veri-te resveratrol is ideal for use in ‘beauty from within’ products, topical creams and serum applications.

Manage cardiovascular health

According to Innova Insights, heart health is one of the top concerns among consumers aged 65+. With age, the cardiovascular system becomes less capable of adapting to normal fluctuations in one’s daily routine. Keeping the cardiovascular system flexible helps maintain normal blood pressure, blood flow, blood glucose levels and overall health and wellness.

Resveratrol offers a range of potential cardiovascular benefits. It assists in managing cardiovascular health in overweight and obese individuals and has been shown to lower blood pressure and it supports healthy blood flow.15, 16
