Prof Brian Rayner
Emeritus Professor and Senior Scholar at the University of Cape Town
Prof Brian Rayner is an Emeritus Professor and Senior Scholar at the University of Cape Town, where he obtained his MMed and PhD, with his doctoral research focusing on salt sensitivity and hypertension in indigenous South Africans. He received the World Hypertension League Award in 2014 for this work. In 2016, he founded the Kidney and Hypertension Research Unit, which trains nephrologists across sub-Saharan Africa. A former President of the Southern African Hypertension Society, he currently serves on the African Regional Advisory Group of the International Society of Hypertension. His research interests include hypertension therapy, genetic determinants of salt sensitivity, resistant hypertension, and lupus nephritis. He has contributed to numerous clinical guidelines, including for WHO and KDIGO. Prof Rayner has published 177 peer-reviewed articles, delivered over 120 presentations, authored six book chapters, and served as a principal investigator in multiple international trials, including ASCEND-ND, Fidelio, and Tecos, among others.
