Closing gaps in asthma care

South Africa is ranked 25th worldwide for asthma prevalence and is ranked fifth for asthma mortality. Paediatric cases make up a sizeable portion of this. What is the role of South African clinicians in closing gaps in care that exist in our society? Dr Tshegofatso Mabelane will attempt to answer this question with reference her years of clinical experience and current South African asthma guidelines.

Dr Tshefogatso Mabelane

  • Family Physician Allergist

Dr Tshegofatso Mabelane is the first and only HPCSA certified Family Physician Allergist in South Africa. She obtained her subspecialist qualification in Allergology through the University of Cape Town and College of Medicine South Africa. She also did the allergy exam with the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology under the European Union of Medical Specialists.

Dr Mabelane is a member of the Allergy Society of South Africa, the World Allergy Organization, the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. She serves as a committee member in international and local boards including the College of Medicine South Africa (Diploma in Allergy) and Food allergy for the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology.

Her research in allergy led to the diagnosis of the 4th largest cohort in the world with red meat allergy. Dr Mabelane is passionate about health education in the underserved and manages a health awareness program in Seshego Zone 5.
