Discussion of T2DM complications with Dr Ankia Coetzee

Dr Coetzee will talk about complications in T2DM including Covid-19 and malignancy. Based on clinical data, Dr Coetzee will explore where GLP-1 RAs, specifically dulaglutide, combined with other T2DM therapies could provide the control patients need.

Furthermore, CV outcomes trails of GLP-1 RAs will be considered in order to understand how dulaglutide differs from other molecules of the same class in terms of the benefits demonstrated. A clinical case study will also be presented to demonstrate how the clinical data can translate into practice.

Dr Coetzee graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2005. In 2013 she completed her internal medicine degree at Stellenbosch University and in 2018 she completed her doctorate degree in endocrinology. In 2015, she was appointed as a consultant physician in the Department of Medicine at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital. In 2019, Dr Coetzee completed a postgraduate course in diabetes management at St Andrews University in Scotland. She was one of the co-authors of the 2017 Society for Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes of South Africa guidelines on the management of type 2 diabetes and served as chairperson of SEMDSA from 2019 to 2021. She currently serves as a reviewer of several journals including the Journal of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes of South Africa, the SA Medical Journal and Clinical Chemistry. She also serves as a reviewer for the UK Medical Research Council and was a faculty member of the World Congress of Internal Medicine, the International Conference of Endocrinology and the International Society for Endocrinology and Metabolism. Dr Coetzee has presented papers at both international and national congresses and is regularly quoted in the mainstream media. She is a prolific researcher and has published several papers in peer reviewed journals.
