After graduating with a MBChB degree at the University of Natal, Mahomed Omar specialised in Internal Medicine, becoming a Fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa and Member of the Royal College of Physicians (UK). He then further specialised in Diabetes and Endocrinology and in the process obtained his doctorate for a thesis in the field of diabetes. Subsequently he was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (London). He was made Professor and later, after going into private practice, Honorary Professor in the Dept. of Medicine, Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine. He has served on the Executive Committees of the Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism of South Africa (SEMDSA) and has been vice president of the Pan Africa Diabetes Study group. He was a member of the steering committee for the formation of the Lipid and Atherosclerosis Society of South Africa (LASSA). From 1998 – 2002 he was a Member of the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Chronic Degenerative Diseases (Diabetes). He has published over hundred scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and has contributed chapters in various books on diabetes. He has been a reviewer for many peer-reviewed journals and sits on the Editorial Board of several journals. In addition, he has presented, and been invited to speak, at numerous national and international scientific meetings. He has served on the guidelines committees for the management of type 2 diabetes in 1) South Africa and 2) Africa. He sits on the panel of the Diabetes and Ramadan International Alliance established by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). He has been the recipient of the 2014 SEMDSA Lifetime Achievement Award. His research interests include the epidemiology and pathogenesis of diabetes and its complications as well as evaluation of novel therapies in diabetes and endocrinology. He has been a Principal Investigator (PI) / National PI in numerous clinical trials. Currently he practices as a diabetologist – endocrinologist and holds a honorary position as professor in the Dept. of Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
