Prof Chetty is a highly respected specialist anaesthesiologist and academic leader, currently serving as President of the South African Society of Anaesthesiologists. He is also the Executive Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital. He previously served as President of Pain SA. Prof Chetty’s academic journey began at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he completed his postgraduate training in anaesthesiology. He further pursued a subspecialist fellowship in critical care and later shifted his focus to pain medicine. His PhD research addressed the management of acute post-operative pain in women undergoing caesarean sections. In addition to his academic leadership, Prof Chetty has been an active contributor to global research initiatives. In 2019, he received the prestigious Discovery Foundation MGH Scholarship, which led to a research fellowship at the Translational Pain Research Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital, affiliated with Harvard Medical School. Prof Chetty’s research interests include acute pain management in obstetric patients, neuropathic pain syndromes, and pain and sedation management in critically ill patients. With over a decade of experience in clinical leadership roles, including as Head of Clinical Unit at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital and Senior Specialist Anaesthesiologist at Helen Joseph Hospital, Prof Chetty continues to influence the field of anaesthesiology and critical care both locally and internationally. His passion for improving patient care and advancing medical education makes him a leading figure in South African anaesthesiology.
