Overview of Chronic Kidney Disease

Join Medical Chronicle for a one-hour, CPD-accredited webinar on fortification in nutrition, presented by Dr Heleen Bierman. This webinar is sponsored by iNova.

Dr Bierman will present an overview of chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder. Mineral and bone disorders are part and parcel of chronic kidney disease. We find abnormalities of calcium, phosphate, parathyroid hormone, fibroblast growth factor 23 and vitamin D metabolism. This again leads to abnormalities in bone turnover, mineralisation, volume linear growth or strength.

A major concern is extraskeletal calcification.

The work group of the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) recommended in 2006 the use of the term ‘chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder’ (CKD-MBD) to describe a systemic disorder that incorporates these abnormalities.

Each of these abnormalities is associated with high mortality rates, primarily from cardiovascular complications.

This talk will tackle on these disorders and focus on:

  • Pathophysiology of CKD-MBS
  • Diagnosis and screening
  • Treatment and follow-up
  • Case studies.
