He completed his internship and community service, spent time in Anesthesiology obtaining a Diploma in Anesthesiology (CMSA). He then decided to pursue a career in Neurology, because was interested in understanding the human brain/nervous system, and grew to enjoy the assessment and treatment of neurological disorders. He registered as a specialist neurologist with the Health Professional Council of South Africa shortly thereafter.

After supervising the care for all the neurology patients at Helen Joseph Hospital in 2014, Dr Kathan was approached by the WDGMC to join their team of specialists and Sub-specialists.
