Prof Adrian Brink

Prof Brink is the Wernher and Beit Professor and Chair, as well as Head of the Division of Medical Microbiology at the UCT. He earned his MBChB from the University of Pretoria in 1984, followed by specialised certifications in Aviation and Diving Medicine. He completed his MMed in Medical Microbiology at the same institution in 1994. With over three decades of experience, Prof Brink has held various esteemed positions, including Specialist Consultant and Acting Head of the Department of Medical Microbiology at the University of Pretoria and Head of Clinical Microbiology at Ampath National Laboratory Services. Since 2019, he has been leading the Division of Medical Microbiology at UCT. Prof Brink's research focuses on antibiotic resistance, gastrointestinal microbiome interactions, and antimicrobial stewardship. He has published over 200 research papers and contributed to both local and international surveillance studies. His research activities include exploring infection markers in patients living with HIV/AIDS and implementing large-scale antibiotic stewardship programmes, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. In addition to his research, Prof Brink has made significant contributions to professional organisations. He was the founding president of the Federation of Infectious Diseases of Southern Africa from 2005 to 2009 and is currently a member of the Executive Committee. He is also a founding co-chair of the South African Antibiotic Stewardship Programme and serves on several advisory committees, including the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance. His leadership continues to shape the landscape of medical microbiology and public health in South Africa and beyond.
