Dr Tshakhuma is driven by a passion to improve patient outcomes. His main foci include managing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes-related nephropathy, and HIV-associated kidney disease—major contributors to chronic kidney disease in South Africa. Originally interested in engineering, Dr Tshakhuma pursued medicine after witnessing the impact of specialist shortages during his time as a Medical Officer at Pietersburg Hospital. This experience inspired his subspecialisation in nephrology, where he saw an opportunity to fill a critical gap in care. Alongside his clinical work, he is dedicated to medical education, aiming to train the next generation of nephrologists to strengthen capacity across South Africa’s healthcare sector. He advocates for collaborative care, organ donation awareness, and expanding access to transplantation as sustainable solutions for managing the rising burden of kidney failure in the country.
