Treatment advances in psoriatic arthritis: Focus on IL-17 inhibitors
Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is characterised by inflammatory arthritis in association with psoriasis. The latter is a dermatological disease that manifests as erythematous scaling plaques. Psoriasis affects between 0.3% to 1% of the population. An estimated 30% of patients living with psoriasis develop PsA. In this webinar, sponsored by Eli Lilly, Prof Mahmood Ally, will discuss treatment advances in PsA with a special focus on interleukin 17 inhibitors.

Prof. Ally completed his medical training at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1985 and his specialist training in rheumatology in 2000. From 2000-2005 he was head of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Medical University of South Africa, and head of the department of rheumatology at the Dr Mukhari Academic Hospital in Ga-Rankuwa, City of Tshwane. In 2006, he joined the University of Pretoria (UP) and Steve Biko Academic Hospital where he was instrumental in establishing the Unit of Rheumatology. He is currently a principal specialist and senior lecturer in the Department of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at the UP, and assistant to the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences. Since 2017 he has been Deputy Chair of the National Department of Health’s Research Committee, a position he still holds. The role of the committee is to identify and advise the Minister on health research priorities, develop an integrated national strategy for health research, and advise the Minister on the application and implementation thereof. During his long and illustrious career, Prof Ally has been involved in a number of international randomised controlled studies as a principal investigator. He has also contributed to a number of articles in peer-reviewed journals.
