WSP project teams receive multiple top honours at Steel Awards 2018

WSP in Africa, one of the largest multi-disciplinary engineering consulting firms on the continent, are honoured that two of the firm’s projects received multiple awards – including Overall winner – at the Southern African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC) Steel Awards 2018.

The Sun Arena at Time Square in Menlyn Maine


This prestigious project received the following accolades at the 2018 Awards ceremony; Overall winner, ASTPM Tubular Category winner, Commercial Category winner.

The Sun Arena roof – winner of the ASTPM Tubular Category at Steel Awards 2018

Owned by Sun International, the Sun Arena is now the biggest live entertainment venue in Pretoria, Gauteng. The purpose of the arena was to create a multi-faceted events and performance space of international standard, where some of the biggest music concerts in South Africa will be held.

Appointed as the Structural and Civil Engineers for this project, the team of engineers from WSP in Africa worked closely with the entire project team from the start of the project to conceive the best structure and decide on the appropriate materials for the arena. The innovative design and engineering solutions that were brought to this project means the completed arena can accommodate 8 500 seated patrons and can be adapted to accommodate 1 300 banquet guests, or up to 18 000 delegates in a school room format – in a venue that is acoustically sound and watertight, thus ensuring a higher quality experience for event goes.

Shoprite Checkers Cilmor Distribution Centre


This greenfield project received the 2018 accolades in two categories, including the Safintra Factory and Warehouse Category and the Global Roofing Solutions Metal Cladding Category.

The Shoprite Group’s centre located in Cilmor Street in Brackenfell, Cape Town, is described by the Group as one of the most technologically advanced distribution centres on the continent.

Cold storage area of Shoprite Cilmor distribution centreSpanning 123 000m², the distribution centre consolidates the activities of five different distribution centres spread across Cape Town. Construction began in February 2016 and the completed built project consisted of multiple buildings, where the main buildings comprise of warehouses for Drygoods and Returns and a Cold Storage Facility. As part of this project, external peripheral buildings were also constructed, namely, Truck and Truckwash facilities, Offices, Guardhouse, Truck Refuelling and Central Generator Plant.

WSP was appointed for the full project scope (stage 1-6) for the following services: Structural design of warehouse floors and super structures; HVAC, Wet Services, Electrical, Smoke Detection, Vertical Transportation, Fire (CFD Modelling only), Bulk Fuel Storage, Refrigeration and Insulation.
